Gor Mahia silence Kakamega Homeboyz
Ephraim Guikan scored twice for Gor Mahia while the other goal was scored by former Homeboyz defender Charles Momanyi. Ali Bhai and Allan Wanga scored the goals for Homeboyz.
Strong start
Homeboyz started the game on a high in search of early goals. First, it was Allan Wanga whose 4th-minute header from a Hedmond Mauda cross went narrowly wide. Ten minutes later, Noah Wafula’s goal-bound shot was blocked by former Homeboyz defender Charles Momanyi as the hosts went all out. Moments, Gor keeper Shaban Odhoji was called into action to deny Estone Esiye who unleashed a long-range shot.
Gor Mahia had an opportunity threaten Homeboyz backline in the 21st minute when they won a corner but Lawrence Juma’s delivery was poor and it went across goal. Momanyi did well to clear an Esiye corner kick at the half-hour mark with Wanga ready to pounce.
Bhai stunner
Homeboyz pressure finally paid off in the 32nd when St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale alumnus, Ali Bhai gave them the lead with a wonder goal. The midfielder beat Shaban Odhoji on Gor Mahia goal with a looped effort from 20-yards out. The lead lasted for ten minutes as Ivorian Ephreim Guikan restored parity with a simple tap-in from a Sammy Onyango cross. The first stanza ended even.
The start of the second half was feisty as both teams looked to cancel each other out. Cercidy Okeyo’s long-range effort in the 49th minute went over the bar while Wanga missed a simple tap-in after some good work from Hassan Kiyoyo.
Guikan, Wanga
Guikan grabbed his second of the match in the 55th minute. The forward capitalized on a defensive mix-up to hand K’Ogalo the lead. Five minutes later the Ivorian nearly registered a hat-trick but his ferocious drive missed the target by inches. Wanga finally got his goal in the 65th minute firing home from close range.
The reigning champions then went all out looking to get a third. Homeboyz keeper David Juma was forced to come off his line to deny substitute Meddie Kaegre in the 72nd minute. The goal finally came in the 80th minute through former Homeboyz defender Momanyi who beat Juma with a free header to earn Gor Mahia all the three points.
