Men: how to boost your libido
If you’re feeling your love life is lacking that special spark, you’re not alone.
In fact, a recent study revealed nearly 70 per cent of Australian women aged between 40 – 65 years old have a low sex drive.
And men are also feeling lacklustre and less connected to their partners too, with research showing as many as one in five also experiencing a loss in libido.
Dr Mike Pukanic, founder of Fontanella’s Libido Supplement, said while a mismatch in sexual desire can be a problem for some, once the situation is remedied this can ‘yield some fantastic relationship benefits.’
From why sleep can be a savior to which supplements actually work, FEMAIL takes a look at Dr Pukanic’s top five tips for revving up your sex life naturally.
Give your self-confidence a boost
The pressures of modern living mean it can be hard to find time to take care of yourself – and if this goes on for too long, self-confidence can plunge.
Dr Pukanic firmly believes poor self-image can have a major impact on your sex life as this can influence how comfortable you feel not just with yourself but also with your partner.
‘To boost your confidence, you can make a conscious effort to put more focus on the things that you love about yourself because we all have at least one!’
He suggests exercise as a sure-fire confidence booster because not only can it help improve how we look and feel, physical activity can also produce endorphins which can lead to the release of sex hormones to help get you in the mood.
If the gym isn’t your thing, Dr Pukanic said it’s worth trying other confidence-boosting hobbies such as belly dancing, salsa, singing and tango.
Lower your stress levels
If you are feeling highly stressed or anxious this can have a detrimental effect on your sex life.
‘Cortisol is one of the hormones produced by feelings of stress, which in turn has a negative impact on your sex drive, Dr Pukanic explained.
‘Increased levels of this hormone over an extended period can result in a suppressed sex drive.’
If stress is a problem, finding ways to lower this can make a difference. Dr Pukanic’s recommendations include meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, relaxing walks and listening to calming music.
Eat libido-boosting foods
Many of us know oysters are one of the main foods you can eat to increase your libido.
They’re loaded with zinc – a mineral that helps boost testosterone in both men and women.
But if oysters don’t tickle your fancy, Dr Pukanic said there are some other foods you may want to try to increase your sex drive.
These lust-inducing foods include watermelon, chocolate, avocados and nuts, particularly walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts
Rev up your sex life with extra sleep
If you’re not getting enough sleep, chances are you will find your desire dwindling.
A study in the Journal of Sexual Mediciiner from 2015 found just one extra hour of sleep each night can increase the chances that a woman will have sex with her partner by 14 percent.
‘Lack of sleep can evidently have a negative impact on your mood as well as affect hormone levels, in some cases causing a decrease in desire and arousal,’ said Dr Pukanic.
