Lupita Opens Up About Her Natural Hair Journey

The natural African Kinky hair has been a hot topic for the past few years. Even the mighty Google found itself on the wrong side of some people when search results for the term “Unprofessional hair” predominantly featured African women in the glory of their natural hair.

Lupita Nyong’o gave her opinion on natural hair to Allure Magazine, for their March “The Culture of Hair” issue. Like many people around the world, she felt the need to conform to the western standards of beauty and set out to relax and straighten her hair during her teenage years. This is despite protests from her mother.

She eventually outgrew her relaxed hair and decided to shave her head partly because she found it practical.
“It was so scary but liberating because I went completely bald”. Lupita kept her hair short long after that and even managed to get her Oscar-winning role in 12 Years a Slave as a short-haired girl in a super competitive industry with a vibrant hair scene.

The award-winning actress has been a staple on red carpets, front and center on the fashion scene with her natural hair over the last three years. She learnt to embrace her natural hair as it is but found it a bit challenging to maintain when she moved to America to further her studies. Apparently, very few hairdressers are equipped to handle the natural African hair, making it hard to care or even style. But she managed to find one who has given her tips on how to maintain a healthy head of hair. Of late, she got inspired to grow out her natural hair.

Lupita Nyong’o is currently riding high with her latest release, the Black Panther movie. All the Premiers have seen the actors and actresses don African inspired fashion choices. The star has been dazzling on the promotional tours with her recent hair choices, which she attributes to hairstylist Vernon Francois, who also supplies most of her hair care products. Her star is bound to shine further as she strives to maintain her authenticity, without conforming to the norm, in this case, hair.
